In Loving Memory of Dick Calkins

Founder of the International Academy of Dispute Resolution (INADR)

Portrait of Dick Calkins with a black remembrance ribbon and the words In Loving Memory, Dick Calkins

A Visionary, a Mentor, and a Legacy That Will Live On

It is with profound sadness that the International Academy of Dispute Resolution (INADR) mourns the passing of Dick Calkins, one of the founding figures of our organization and a remarkable leader whose vision, dedication and passion helped shape the international mediation community.

Dick was far more than a founder. He was the driving force behind INADR for many years, a passionate advocate for mediation education and a firm believer in the transformative power of dialogue, understanding and peaceful conflict resolution.

He understood that the future of mediation depended on the next generation. Through his leadership and tireless commitment, INADR developed opportunities for law students, undergraduates and young people from around the world to experience mediation firsthand, develop essential skills and build relationships across cultures and borders.

Those who knew Dick will remember not only his professional achievements but also his generosity, kindness, encouragement and unwavering belief in the potential of others. His legacy lives on in every INADR tournament, every student who discovers the value of mediation, every educator who shares this knowledge, and every friendship formed through our international community.

On behalf of the entire INADR family, we extend our deepest condolences to Dick’s daughter, Kathie Calkins Keyes, his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone whose life he touched.

As we remember Dick and celebrate his extraordinary contributions, INADR is working to reestablish the Dick and Anita Calkins Fund, an initiative originally created to provide financial assistance to students who wish to participate in INADR mediation tournaments.

Through this initiative, we hope to continue the legacy of Dick and Anita by opening doors for young people who might otherwise be unable to benefit from these educational opportunities.

We will honor his memory not only through our words, but through our continued commitment to the mission he believed in so deeply.

Forever part of our INADR family and with profound gratitude and affection.
